Part of the Bikes for Tykes program is having mentors help out the kids when their bikes need repair or basic maintenance. You don’t have to know how to fix bikes, all you need is the desire to want to have a long reaching positive influence on a child’s life. Below are some of the things you would be asked to do:

• Pick up the child, their parent, and bike from the school or their house, then take them to the Bike Saviours Bike Co-op (the Tempe co-op on University & Roosevelt has tools, spare parts, and mechanics that will teach you and the child how to fix the bike.)

• Drop the child, parent, and bike off

That’s pretty much it. The Bike Liaison from the school will coordinate the pickup time and spot with you and the parent, so you just have to show up. If you don’t have a car don’t worry, the liaison will figure out a ride for them and you can just meet them at the co-op.

The goal of this is to help foster some big brother / big sister relationships with the kids. A lot of these children need positive encouragement especially in academic areas. They are faced with various social, family, and personal challenges that a lot of other children do not have to deal with. Having a positive role model to look up to will aid them in succeeding and various areas of their life.
